12-Year-Old Boy Kills Intruder After His Grandmother Was Shot

A 12-year-old boy defended his grandmother when two intruders broke into her home in North Carolina.

The incident happened after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. Two masked men broke into 73-year-old Linda Ellis’ home in Goldsboro, WRAL reported. One of the suspects was identified as 19-year-old Khalil Herring. He was armed and allegedly shot Ellis. He tried to flee the home after being shot by the 12-year-old. Officials said he eventually died because of his injuries.

“A 12-year-old juvenile occupant of the residence shot at the suspects with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee the area,” wrote officials in a statement. “Preliminary evidence suggests Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery.”

The Goldsboro police found Ellis in her apartment with a gunshot wound. She was treated for her non-life-threatening injury at Wayne UNC Health Care.

Linda Ellis expressed her distress after the incident. “Why would somebody come into her house and do this? It’s got to stop,” Ellis told WRAL. “I don’t know what they’re thinking around here in Goldsboro, but it’s got to stop.”

The 12-year-old who killed the home intruder is not expected to be charged by the Goldsboro Police Department.

No information has been released about the second suspect as the investigation is ongoing.
