African American Police Officer Was ‘Ambushed’ Tuesday Morning In Selma Near His Apartment On Break
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson confirmed the officer’s identity as Officer Marquis Moorer. He was only 25 years old.
Jackson reported that the shooting happened between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. when Moorer, who was on duty, stopped by his apartment at Selma Square Apartments for a short break.
A suspect went up to Moorer and opened fire, also wounding a woman who was Moorer’s “significant other,” Jackson explained.
The woman was hospitalized, but details of the severity of her injuries remain unknown.
Jackson said the officer’s death and the injury of his girlfriend was an “ambush” and said whoever is responsible will face capital murder and attempted murder charges.
According to Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the case.
“We did this right,” Perkins said. “We handed off the investigation to the SBI and the state did it right and delivered an arrest within 24 hours.”
The mayor thanked other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that gave support during the tragedy.
“Selma has had 15 murders, and we have made arrests in nine of those,” he said, “I’m sure if people would come forward like they did with Officer Moorer’s shooting we could make arrests in those cases as well. If you see something, say it. If you know something, tell it.”
“You have this many agencies working this hard and things happen,” he said, slamming the murderer. “It’s just dumb to shoot a police officer. You are tearing down your community, but you know every agency is going to respond.”
