Arizona Lawmakers Take Action To Strengthen Future Elections From Voter ID To Prohibiting Ballot Harvesting
A conservative advocacy group and several Republican lawmakers want to give voters the option of adding a new identification requirement for early ballots.
The Arizonans for Voter ID Act would also strengthen laws requiring photo identification to vote in person, as well as strengthen a state law prohibiting ballot harvesting.
“It is undeniable that hundreds of thousands of people have lost faith in the elections. Now, you may agree with them, you may disagree with them. You can blame whomever you want. But by virtue of that many people who are saying, ‘I’m not sure why I should go vote or bother voting because I’m not sure it’s going to be legitimate, I don’t believe the outcome,’ that is an existential threat to democracy. And if you ignore that, if you just dismiss that, that is a form of voter suppression,” said Sen. J.D. Mesnard, a Chandler Republican.
Voters are currently required to sign the outside of the envelope in which they submit their early ballots. To protect the confidentiality of their information, the proposed ballot measure would require voters to place their affidavits in a separate envelope.
Non-operating identification cards — state ID cards that don’t allow you to drive a car — are normally $12, but the bill would make them free for anyone who swears they’re getting the card to vote. This demolishes Democrat arguments that describe Voter ID as a “poll tax.”
Arizona State Rep. Jake Hoffman (R) told Gateway Pundit’s Jordan Conradson that Voter ID should be a bipartisan issue.
Hoffman stated, “82% of Arizonans support [Voter ID]. That includes 93% of Republicans, 83% of independents, and 69% of Democrats. This is not a partisan issue. This is a common-sense issue. And quite honestly, we should have Democrats standing behind us, too. We just know they won’t because they’d rather promulgate conspiracy theories than actually support the will of the people.”
