Aunt Jemima Name, Logo Officially Changed, Great-Grandson Hurt By Erasing History Of Black Female
Aunt Jemima brand gets new name and logo as Quaker Oats announced ‘Aunt Jemima brand pancake mix and syrup will be renamed Pearl Milling Company’
The products will continue being sold until June and then the new packaging will change over.
AP News In June 2020, “Quaker Oats announced Wednesday that it will retire the Aunt Jemima brand, saying the company recognizes the character’s origins are ‘based on a racial stereotype.”
Aunt Jemima’s great-grandson responded at that time saying he was against the idea to easily erase its history by ‘retiring’ the breakfast brand.
The decision came in response to the killing of George Floyd according to the Chicago-based Quaker Foods company.
Patch wrote when speaking with the great-grandson of ‘Aunt Jemima’, “This is an injustice for me and my family. This is part of my history, sir…This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother’s history. A black female. … It hurts.”
YouTuber Keemstar mocked the decision, “Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup new logo & name! RACISM JUST ENDED!”
