Biden’s Breaks Commitment He Made In Interview With Stephanopoulos On Stranded Americans In Afghanistan
Biden promised in interview: ‘If there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay to get them all out’
Biden has seemed to forgotten his commitment to stay in Afghanistan until all Americans have been evacuated.
Marine Corps Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. said Monday evening that the last of the United States soldiers stationed at Kabul International Airport had departed, ending the military’s drawdown in the country, despite the fact that hundreds of Americans are still likely to remain stranded.
McKenzie, the head of the United States Central Command, said that some American citizens who wanted to leave Afghanistan remained in the country.
“We did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out,” he said.
According to a senior State Department source, there are still a “small number” of Americans in Afghanistan according to Fox News.
According to the source, the number of Americans is “below 250,” and some more have left Afghanistan in recent hours. The State Department is also committed to evacuating “those who worked with us,” referring to Afghan “partners.”
The announcement came less than a day before the Taliban’s formal deadline, which was 3:29 p.m. EST Tuesday – 11:59 p.m. local time in Kabul, according to US military officials.
The Taliban has said that regular travel would be allowed after the US retreat is finished on Tuesday and they seize command of the airport.
“In an exclusive interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, President Joe Biden said the U.S. is committed to getting every American out of Afghanistan — even if it means potentially extending the mission beyond his Aug. 31 deadline for a total withdrawal,” ABC News reported.
