BLM Chapter Calls American Flag ‘Symbol Of Hatred’ — Denounces Those Who Fly It As Unsafe, Racist, Stupid
Black Lives Matter’s (BLM) Utah Chapter has condemned the American flag as a “symbol of hatred” and branded those that display it to be “racist.”
“When we Black Americans see this flag we know the person flying it is not safe to be around,” the BLM’s chapter’s post said. “When we see this flag we know the person flying it is a racist. When we see this flag we know that the person flying it lives in a different America than we do. When we see this flag, we question your intelligence. We know to avoid you. It is a symbol of hatred.”
The BLM local chapter went on to taunt those who found the post offensive calling them out as “racists.”
“Welcome racists. We know you are big mad about the racist flag post. You will not be heard here. You will be blocked and your comments will be deleted. We will be donating $1 to AOC’s election campaign for every racist that we block. Thank you for contributing to the re-election of AOC. We will jot down your names and attribute each donation to you. Comment below to help her once again head to Washington,” it added, referring to self-proclaimed Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Chapter founder Lex Scott later on confirmed the post to Fox News saying the BLM Utah chapter wanted to prove how hate organizations can allegedly “co-opt” the American flag without prompting comparable repercussions.
“Ever since we put up the post, our page has been flooded with hatred from people who fly the flag,” Scott said. ‘And we want to thank those people for proving our point.”
Asked for comment on those saying that the American flag is a symbol of all Americans, the BLM leader retorted that those offended by her chapter’s statement should take it up with hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan, which she said have been proudly waving Old Glory at their rallies instead.
“I would ask those people if they ever showed outrage when the Ku Klux Klan marched down the street holding that flag, if they ever showed outrage last week when Patriot Front, a White supremacist group, was marching through Philadelphia holding that flag, if they feel outraged that the Three Percenters have co-opted their flag, that the Proud Boys have co-opted their flag,” Scott said.
“If they have never shown outrage when hate groups use their symbol for hatred, then they need to not come to us — they need to go directly to those groups. When you allow a hate group to fly that flag in the name of hatred, and you say nothing, and you do nothing, you send a message to us that you agree with their messaging. You agree with that hate, and you condone it,” she added.
Reports noted, however, that contrary to the claims of Scott, the Patriot Front marchers she was referring to were not from the city and the said demonstrators retreated after clashes with local residents.
“They started engaging with citizens of Philadelphia, who were none too happy about what they were saying,” Philadelphia Police Officer Michael Crum said according to ABC affiliate WPVI. “These males felt threatened, and, at one point, somebody in their crowd threw a type of smoke bomb to cover their retreat, and they literally ran away from the people of Philadelphia.”
Scott: Every racist I have encountered either wear that flag or flies it
She went on to suggest that those who care about the American flag should protect it not simply against her criticism, but also against hate organizations that try to use it.
“I want you to walk in my shoes for a second. I want you to picture this. You show up for a protest, and hundreds of armed White men show up. They have guns, they yell racial slurs at you, they are carrying and wearing American flags,” the BLM chapter leader added.
“If you see that every person that hates you is carrying an American flag, how would you feel about that flag? I feel fear. That is not up for debate. I feel like the person flying it is racist, because every racist that I have come in contact with is either wearing that flag or flying that flag. I feel as if I should avoid that person because they may be dangerous.”
Despite carrying the BLM name, Scott has said in the past that Black Lives Matter Utah is an autonomous chapter that is not linked with the national BLM movement.
“In our chapter, we work with Republicans and Democrats for police reforms,” Scott said previously.
Scott’s group recent post comes after a controversial remark by New York Times’ Mara Gay who said last month that she was “disturbed” to see trucks carrying dozens of American flags in Long Island.

“I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed,” Gay of New York Times editorial board said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”.
“I saw dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with expletives against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing. Essentially the message was clear: This is my country. This is not your country. I own this,” she added.
On the Fourth of July, The New York Times also tweeted: “Today, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person’s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation.”
