College Medical Professor Learns ‘When Activism Takes Over Medicine’, Forced To Apologize For Language

In a medical class, a professor of medicine at the University of California apologized to his students for using the term “pregnant women” instead of “pregnant people.”

A University of California endocrinology professor wrote an email to students apologizing for suggesting that only women can give birth, according to Katie Herzog’s article in Bari Weiss’s famous Substack magazine.

“Professors are apologizing for saying ‘male’ and ‘female.’ Students are policing teachers. This is what it looks like when activism takes over medicine,” Herzog wrote.

“I don’t want you to think that I am in any way trying to imply anything, and if you can summon some generosity to forgive me, I would really appreciate it … Again, I’m very sorry for that. It was certainly not my intention to offend anyone. The worst thing that I can do as a human being is be offensive … I said ‘when a woman is pregnant,’ which implies that only women can get pregnant and I most sincerely apologize to all of you,” the professor said.

Because “acknowledging biological sex can be considered transphobic,” one UC student, whom Herzog renamed “Lauren” for the purpose of privacy, claimed that medical instructors are often compelled to apologize for their language.

According to Herzog:

“When sex is acknowledged by her instructors, it’s sometimes portrayed as a social construct, not a biological reality, she says. In a lecture on transgender health, an instructor declared: ‘Biological sex, sexual orientation, and gender are all constructs. These are all constructs that we have created.”

“In other words, some of the country’s top medical students are being taught that humans are not, like other mammals, a species comprising two sexes. The notion of sex, they are learning, is just a man-made creation.”

Professors are scared of backlash from students who don’t believe in biological sex, according to Herzog. These prestigious schools provide online forums where students may correct teachers and raise concerns.

During an online discussion, one student, according to “Lauren,” criticized a professor for using words like “male” and “female” and started crying.

In response, UC medical students distribute petitions criticizing instructors for using “wrong speak.” The pronouns “she” and “her,” as well as the words “father” and “son,” were used by one professor. A petition was signed by students condemning the professor’s use of “cisnormative” language.

The instructor apologized for using “binary” terminology in an email to the students.

Herzog said, “This hypersensitivity is undermining medical training and many of these students are likely not even aware that their education is being informed by ideology.”

This newly “woke” medical language isn’t limited to California medical schools. According to the BBC, the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom adopted “gender-inclusive language” for its maternity services. Hospitals will now refer to breastfeeding as “chestfeeding” rather than “breastfeeding,” and “birthing parent” rather than “pregnant woman.”

Congress has also picked up on the phrase. During a hearing for the Committee on Oversight and Reform in May, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) referred to women as “birthing people.”
