Czech Senate Approves Amendment Granting Right To Bear Arms In Constitution
Following a successful petition drive, the Czech Republic’s Senate approved adding a right to self-defense with a weapon to its Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.
A total of 54 of the 74 senators voted to amend the charter, exceeding the required three-fifths majority of votes, and it will become law once signed by Czech president Milos Zeman, who has previously expressed support for a European Second Amendment and, in any case, is unable to veto the constitutional change.
According to Czech Radio, the new part of the charter will state, “the right to defend one’s own life or the life of another person with a weapon is guaranteed under the conditions laid down by law.”
Breitbart News reported that the amendment comes after a successful petition campaign that saw over 102,000 people sign a petition demanding that a right to bear arms in self-defense be added to the country’s constitution in reaction to European Union attempts to restrict guns and other weapons ownership throughout the continent.

While the Czech Republic has previously been compelled to comply with European Commission’s gun rules, the constitutional amendment would now prohibit any EU directives from limiting citizens’ and residents’ right to bear arms.
The European Commission has claimed that firearms restrictions are necessary to combat terrorism, but critics have pointed out that terrorists have been found to mainly use illegal weapons.
For years, the Czech Republic has opposed EU gun control efforts, and President Milo Zeman has been a staunch defender of the right to carry weapons, signing the petition that resulted in the 2018 constitutional amendment.
Zeman enraged journalists the year prior after he brandished a fake rifle during a press conference with the words “for journalists” inscribed on the side of it, despite the fact the only “ammunition” it contained was Becherovka liqueur.

Unlike European Union bureaucrats, the Czech president believes that European citizens should have the right to bear arms in order to defend themselves from terrorists.
Meanwhile, in the United States there’s a continued polarizing debate on issues surrounding gun control.
Earlier this year, President Joe Biden called on the Senate to hastily pass gun control measures— including AR-15s, the most popular rifle in America.
“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common-sense steps that’ll save lives in the future," President Biden said following the deadly shooting in Boulder, Colo.

A 2019 data revealed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found that knives or other “cutting tools” kill far more people than rifles in America.
The FBI said 1,476 homicides were through knives, triple the amount of those killed by rifles which at that time showed that the number of homicides committed with a rifle was 364.
