Dallas County Jury Indicts Teenager For Murdering Boy, Teens Mother Pushes Allegation About Murder
A teenager suspected of abducting a four-year-old boy from his Texas bedroom, stabbing him, and leaving him to die on a Dallas street has been charged with three counts of capital murder and faces a death sentence.
According to court documents, a grand jury indicted Darriynn Ronnell Brown, 18, on Monday on charges of capital murder, kidnapping, and burglary in the May 15 slaying of Cash Gernon.
Brown was caught on video and was identified in court. This verified his identity in connection to the murder.
Brown would face lethal injection or life in prison without the chance of release if convicted of capital murder.
The account of the child’s terrible death rocked the town and the country, and many people were left wondering what had transpired that morning. Court documents reveal a timeline of the terrible incident.
5 AM:
Gernon and his twin were abducted from a residence on Florina Parkway where they were residing with a friend of their father’s, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. According to investigators, the father abandoned the boys in late March. The biological mother of the boys was said to be looking for them.
According to the arrest warrant, a guy matching Brown’s description was spotted lifting the infant from his crib about that time on home surveillance footage.
6:40 AM:
A neighbor out for a morning walk discovers Gernon’s body eight blocks away on Saddleridge Drive around 6:40 a.m.
“The closer I get to it, I can tell it’s a human because I see hands… and I see legs,” said Antwainese Square, who later called 911. “To see a child covered in blood in the middle of the street? It’s truly traumatizing.”
Officers arrived on the Mountain Creek in a matter of minutes.
7:00 AM: Dallas police begin knocking on doors
“This started about 7 in the morning,” says Joe Bubel, revealing that an officer knocked on his door.
“They said to me ‘do you have any children in your home? Small children? I said ‘no, I don’t…I said are you looking?’ And they said ‘well, we have a young boy’…”
10:48 AM: Woman Calls 911
The father’s acquaintance who had been caring for the four-year-old and his brother called 911 “at about 10:48 a.m., Witness… called 911 to report that a 4-year-old Caucasian male could not be located,” according to court filings.
At the time, neighbors wondered why it took so long for someone to notice Gernon had gone missing.
“Nobody came looking for this child!” questioned Toronda Alford, “This child was four! Who didn’t know their child was missing during this period of time?”
On Saturday, FBI agents were spotted hauling bags of evidence from the woman’s home. She then identified Brown as the man seen on a house surveillance camera removing Gernon from his crib, according to court records.
Saturday, 10:00 PM Dallas Police Announce Brown’s Arrest
Brown was taken into custody and charged with burglary and kidnapping in Dallas County.
His mother supported him, alleging he was “set up” and that he was incapable of harming a child, and that there was “more to the story.”
Strangers mourned the child’s death. “No matter what happens, it’s not going to bring that little boy back,” said Bubel.
