Dem-Turned-Republican Vernon Jones Challenges Georgia’s Gov. Kemp In 2022 Republican Primary
Former Democrat Georgia state Rep. Vernon Jones has announced his decicion on Thursday as he posted to Twitter and shared, “The time has come. Georiga is ready!”
Jones was a lifelong Democrat who later turned Republican in April 2020 after he openly supported former President Trump’s reelection.
“State Rep. Vernon Jones, who represents portions of metro Atlanta’s DeKalb and Rockdale counties, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he’s supporting Trump because of the Republican president’s handling of the economy and his criminal justice reform efforts,” reported by AP in 2020.
“There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before,” Jones told the outlet on his support for Trump.

Jones posted Friday morning to Instagram and wrote, “Excited to announcr that I am officially entering the race for Governor of Georgia! #gapol #gapolitics #VernonforGovernor #feelthevern”
