Dem-Turned-Republican Vernon Jones Challenges Georgia’s Gov. Kemp In 2022 Republican Primary

Former Democrat Georgia state Rep. Vernon Jones has announced his decicion on Thursday as he posted to Twitter and shared, “The time has come. Georiga is ready!”

Jones was a lifelong Democrat who later turned Republican in April 2020 after he openly supported former President Trump’s reelection.

“State Rep. Vernon Jones, who represents portions of metro Atlanta’s DeKalb and Rockdale counties, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he’s supporting Trump because of the Republican president’s handling of the economy and his criminal justice reform efforts,” reported by AP in 2020.

“There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before,” Jones told the outlet on his support for Trump.

The former Democratic state lawmaker from Georgia stepped down a week later after showing his support for Trump.
“Rep. Vernon Jones announced that he won’t complete his current term representing portions of metro Atlanta’s DeKalb and Rockdale counties in the state House and won’t seek reelection,” AP reported in 2020.
By no surprised, fellow Democrats were quick to pushback against Jones. A community activist at the time running for Jones’ seat in the state’s Democratic primary, Nikema Willaims called Jones an ’embarassment’
In early January 2021, Jones made an announcement to join the Republican Party on Twitter and wrote, “Now more than ever, the Republican Party is in desperate need of leaders that know how to fight. I know how to fight.”
Last month Jones made an annoucement that he was ‘looking closely at Georiga’s race for Governor’ and said, “If it weren’t for Brian Kemp, Donald Trump would still be President of the United States. We need courtageous conservatives leading our states, not those afaid to stand up to the radical left.”
Jones’ announcement included information of a press conference to be ehld on Friday at the Georgia State Capitol.
The details of the annoucement wrote, “In the midst of a battle that will determine the future of not just Georiga, but the future of America and out great experiment known as Democract, we need a fighter for Georiga. Vernon Jobes will address this need and his future efforts to put Georiga first.”

Some video footage shared by Chanlder Crump via Twitter of Jones annoncing his candicady for Governor in the state of Georiga.

Jones posted Friday morning to Instagram and wrote, “Excited to announcr that I am officially entering the race for Governor of Georgia! #gapol #gapolitics #VernonforGovernor #feelthevern
