Despite Failure To Secure Border, Biden Official Aims To Stay The Course

More than 212,000 undocumented aliens were intercepted in July, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the latest month in which border numbers have soared during the Biden administration.

Mayorkas, in a presser at the border in Texas, admitted that at least 212,672 migrants breached the southern border in July, a 13% increase over the already massive 188,000 migrant encounters in June. In July 2020, during 45th President Trump’s watch, there were just 40,929 encounters.

He underlined that 95,788 of the 212,000 people were removed from the country under Title 42 public health protections. However, this figure is lower than the 104,907 migrants deported under Title 42 in June. He also stated that 27% of individuals encountered had had at least one previous encounter in the previous year.

Mayorkas acted concerned about the dire situation at the border, calling it as “one of the toughest challenges we face.”

“It is complicated, changing and involves vulnerable people at a time of a global pandemic,” he said.

Republicans and some Democrats have been putting pressure on the Biden team over the escalating border crisis, which has generated concerns about criminals entering as part of the migrant influx, as well as the possibility of COVID-19 spreading through community release.

Mayorkas acknowledged the COVID-19 difficulty and claimed resources were stretched, but that the positive rate among migrants was allegedly lower than the overall population.

Despite the concerning numbers, Mayorkas stated that the administration intends to stick to its weak border strategy, which he described as establishing “safe, legal, and orderly avenues for migrants,” enhancing processing and pursuing smugglers.
