Dr. Anthony Fauci is an immediate advisor to President Donald Trump and is considered the “de facto public health spokesperson” of the Coronavirus Task Force, led by Vice President Mike Pence.

Fauci has been a presidential advisor since he was first appointed in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan. His official position is Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Fauci was one of the leading researchers at the height of the AIDS epidemic that broke out in the 1980s and continues to work closely with the infectious disease community.

Though it may appear at first glance that Dr. Fauci has made great strides towards the health of the global population, a closer look reveals some questionable actions on his part.

According to Politifact, in 2014 Fauci’s organization, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and the National Institute of Health (NIH), awarded $598,500 in grants to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) to study viruses in wildlife that might jump and infect humans.

The amount was sent to the Wuhan lab over a five year period, according to the American research group running the project.

It’s unfortunate COVID-19 wasn’t stopped before it spread throughout the entire world from its point of origin in Wuhan, China, the same city that the Fauci-funded Wuhan Institute of Virology is located. COVID-19 swept through China and Italy before continuing through western Europe and then the United States by way of cruise ships, airlines, and other means of travel.

President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have both publicly stated that they’ve seen evidence the coronavirus was started in the Wuhan lab.

In an interview with National Geographic published on Monday, Dr. Fauci said he disagreed with the President and the Secretary of State, claiming that there is no evidence that COVID-19 escaped from the Wuhan lab that his organization helped fund.

“If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated … Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species,” said Fauci.

Though opening up America for work in a safe way should be our number one priority at the moment, understanding Dr. Anthony Fauci’s role in funding coronavirus research in Wuhan, China on the U.S. taxpayer’s dime certainly deserves more attention.
