Dr. Fauci Faces Mounting Call To Resign After Report About US Government Funded Wuhan Research

Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing mounting calls for his resignation after a report released by The Intercept about “gain of function” research suggest that the top health official in the Biden administration may have lied about the National Institute of Health (NIH)’s involvement in the said research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, believed to be a possible origin of COVID-19.

Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and chief medical advisor to the president, has insisted in the past that the NIH didn’t fund a “gain-of-function” research at Wuhan.

In a May 2021 testimony to a Senate committee investigating whether the US funded such research, Fauci maintained that the NIH “has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

Recent reports, based on The Intercept article, however, found evidence that the NIH issued a “bat coronavirus grant” to a group called the EcoHealth Alliance for “$3.1 million, including $599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans.”

The publication gained the said 900 new pages of previously undisclosed information from the NIH through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the agency.

The bat coronavirus grant provided the EcoHealth Alliance with a total of $3.1 million, including $599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans. Even before the pandemic, many scientists were concerned about the potential dangers associated with such experiments. The grant proposal acknowledges some of those dangers: “Fieldwork involves the highest risk of exposure to SARS or other CoVs, while working in caves with high bat density overhead and the potential for fecal dust to be inhaled,” The Intercept reported.

Dr. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University and an expert who spoke to The Intercept, elaborated on the findings saying that the “viruses they constructed were tested for their ability to infect mice that were engineered to display human type receptors on their cell.”

“The materials show that the 2014 and 2019 NIH grants to EcoHealth with subcontracts to WIV funded gain-of-function research as defined in federal policies in effect in 2014-2017 and potential pandemic pathogen enhancement as defined in federal policies in effect in 2017-present,” Ebert said in a series of tweets about The Intercept report.

“The materials confirm the grants supported the construction — in Wuhan — of novel chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses that combined a spike gene from one coronavirus with genetic information from another coronavirus, and confirmed the resulting viruses could infect human cells.”

“The materials reveal that the resulting novel, laboratory-generated SARS-related coronaviruses also could infect mice engineered to display human receptors on cells (‘humanized mice’),” Ebert added.

“The materials further reveal for the first time that one of the resulting novel, laboratory-generated SARS-related coronaviruses — one not been previously disclosed publicly — was more pathogenic to humanized mice than the starting virus from which it was constructed and thus not only was reasonably anticipated to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity, but, indeed, was *demonstrated* to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity.”

“The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful,” the top scientist further claimed — putting Fauci in the spotlight for confirming earlier claims by GOP lawmakers that Fauci lied to Congress about the matter.

Calls for Fauci’s investigation

Following the bombshell finding of The Intercept, calls for Fauci to be investigated or to resign grew.

Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio) insinuated that Fauci could be “hiding” something after he lied to Congress about the NIH’s involvement in the said research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“Your tax dollars funded coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. What is Fauci hiding?”

Former White House physician and now Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson also demanded an investigation into Fauci — and he called for the top health advisor to the president to be removed from his post.

“Fauci’s NIH funded DANGEROUS gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Laboratory. The same man that wants to mask your kids and keep us LOCKED DOWN forever helped cause this pandemic. How does he still have a job? Fauci needs to be FIRED and INVESTIGATED immediately!” he said.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley demanded that Fauci resign immediately.

“Anthony Fauci has repeatedly and deliberately misled Congress and the American people. Resign. And face a congressional inquiry,” Hawley said.

Earlier, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul already referred Fauci for a criminal investigation to the Department of Justice over possible perjury related to his congressional testimony where Paul insisted that he  lied on his claims about the NIH and the  Wuhan Institute of Virology.
