Goya Foods Hosting Memorial Day Event To Honor Veterans And Fallen Soldiers
On Monday, Goya Foods will host a Memorial Day ceremony in Brookshire, Texas to pay tribute to America’s veterans and fallen soldiers.
At the event, Goya Foods CEO Bob Unanue will honor many veterans, including Sgt. Marty Gonzalez, a Marine veteran who died in December from injuries he sustained 16 years ago in Iraq.
Gonzalez, a Houston native, was honored for his service with three purple hearts, two bronze stars, and two Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
He died of a blood clot in his lungs caused by injuries he sustained in Iraq, including a gunshot wound to his arm and a broken back, according to ABC13.
It will be Gonzalez’s family’s first Memorial Day without him. Tawnee Gonzalez, his widow, and her daughter will be in attendance to collect the prize.
“He hated the word hero. Because he lived with the guilt of the man that he lost and he never fully forgave himself for the ones he couldn’t bring back. But he was a hero.” his wife Tawnee said in December 2020 the outlet reported.
SGM Victor Lopez, a 93-year-old US Army veteran who fought in the Puerto Rican regiment known as the “Borinqueneers;” US Marine Corps veteran Mark “Oz” Geist, a member of the Annex Security Team that defended the American diplomatic post and CIA annex in Benghazi; and CPL Sue Downes, who lost two limbs when an antitank mine hit her humvee.
At the celebration on Monday, Goya will also install a new American flag on a 125-foot flagpole and introduce a new monument.
Goya sales rise after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s failed attempt to boycott
AOC failed last year an attempt to call for a boycott of Goya Foods CEO Bob Unanue said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was chosen as the company’s “employee of the month” because she gave the company so much attention and causing a spike in sales.
“Unanue was criticized in July for praising President Donald Trump during a visit to the White House.,” USA Today reported.
“We’re all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder,” CEO Robert Unanue said during a speech after a roundtable with Trump and other Hispanic leaders,” the outlet reported.
