Hodgetwins Breakdown Viral Controversial Arrest Video That Led To Police Officer Being Fired
Former La Mesa Police Department Officer Matt Dages who was involved with a controversial arrest of a Black man pleaded not guilty in early March to a charge of falsifying a police report.
Dages was seen on video approaching Amaurie Johnson near a trolley station last year 2 days after the incident with George Floyd in 2020. The on-camera confrontation has become controversial and covered by many political commentators.
“Earlier this year, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office filed a criminal charge against Dages for allegedly falsifying the reason Johnson was arrested. Johnson said at the time of his arrest, officers did not find any evidence of drug paraphernalia during a search but he was still taken into custody anyway,” according to NBC San Diego.
“With video of Johnson’s arrest circulating social media last year, protests were held in La Mesa calling for justice. He was initially released on a misdemeanor citation but the La Mesa Police Department later announced it would not seek charges against him,” NBC San Diego reported.
Amaurie Johnson had filed a federal lawsuit against the city of La Mesa and Dages alleging excessive force, negligence and violence based on his race.
In early March of this year, Dages is seeking to regain his job according to public court filings.
The Hodgetwins decided to commentate on this incident after former police officer and political commentator Brandon Tatum gave his take on the incident.
One user responded to the Hodgetwins clip as a more ‘balanced take’ compared to former officer Brandon Tatum.
The Hodgetwins covered the ‘California Stop and Frisk Law’ also known as ‘Terry Stops’ which is made up of two basic rules from terrorist stops.
“Police may temporarily detain you in a public place even without a valid arrest warrant if they have reasonable suspicion that you have been involved in criminal activity and to police may conduct a pat down search also known as a frisk of your outer clothing to look for weapons,” the Hodgetwins covered in the video.
“If they have a justifiable belief that you may be armed and dangerous, that they have a reasonable suspicion that you are involved in criminal activity like a nuisance and a disguise,” they continued.
