Indiana Deputies Fold Up American Flag Found In Tornado Debris As ‘Respect For Our Flag’

A tornado devastated Jay County, Indiana, on Friday, causing extensive damage to numerous houses. Two sheriff’s officers discovered an American flag buried in the debris after evaluating the damage.

On “Fox & Friends” Monday, the officers, Sergeant Derek Bogenschutz and Deputy Eric Smitley, indicated the tornado damaged houses, cars, and electrical lines.

Two storms hit the area on Friday morning and afternoon, resulting in the tornado. One storm evolved into a supercell, which generated the tornado, according to the National Weather Service. A 100-foot communications tower was also collapsed by the storm, in addition to numerous houses being destroyed.

Bogenschutz and Smitley thought it was extremely important to fold the flag they had just retrieved from a pile of rubble after verifying that all surrounding neighbors were safe.

When asked by ‘Fox & Friends‘ on why he paused to fold Old Glory, Smitley replied, “It just felt right. Respect for our flag, respect for our country.”

Sergeant Bogenschutz learned how to fold the flag from his father, an Army and American Legion member.

He said that the community had banded together to clear up the storm’s debris.

“We have overwhelming support from the community. They’re all coming out [and] helping their neighbors. Everyone’s volunteering where they can.”
