Jack Dorsey Expresses Regret For His ‘Damage’ To The Internet, Suggests Big Tech’s Control Is Dangerous

Twitter co-founder JackDorsey expressed regret for the centralization of the internet. In a tweet published Monday, Dorsey said, “the days of usenet, irc, the web…even email (w PGP)…were amazing. centralizing discovery and identity into corporations really damaged the internet. I realize I’m partially to blame, and regret it.”

In 2006 Dorsey found Twitter and was named the first CEO of the company. Twitter and Facebook, and other widely popular Big Tech companies have faced accusations of suppression of free speech.

With the internet being so widely accessible and capable, its impact on society has been magnanimous. Dorsey stepped down from his role as Twitter CEO late last year.

His tweet lamenting the internet’s centralization and admission of guilt comes after billionaire Elon Musk purchased over 9% of Twitter stock on Monday.

Both Dorsey and Musk have mocked Wedb3, which is a term for a decentralized version of the internet blockchain.

In December of 2021 Musk tweeted “Has anyone seen web3? I can’t find it.” Dorsey responded sarcastically, “It’s somewhere between a and z.”

As The New York Times reported, Web1 is typically referred to as the internet during the 1990s through the early 2000s. During this time, public messaging boards and blogs were popular. Web2 is typically described as the next phase of the internet, when social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube became popular.

Web3 is based on cryptocurrency and may be called the next “phase” of the internet.

News company, DiscloseTV, replied to Dorsey, saying, “Centralizing discovery and identity (either out in the open or via proxy through corporations) into governments is the next worse “evolution” for the Internet.”
