Jamaicans Demand Removal Of Pride Flag From US Embassy For These Reasons
On Jamaica’s Independence Day, outraged Jamaicans protested and asked that the LGBTQ Pride flag flown on the grounds of the US Embassy in Kingston be removed. According to the group, it not only violates articles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, but it is also a kind of cultural imperialism.
The 1961 Vienna Convention reads in Article 3.1 (c):
Promoting friendly relations between the sending State and the receiving State, and developing
their economic, cultural and scientific relations.
Article 20:
The mission and its head shall have the right to use the flag and emblem of the sending State on
the premises of the mission, including the residence of the head of the mission, and on his means of
transport
The term “Cultural Imperialism,” which appeared on the majority of the banners, generally refers to the exercise of control in cultural relationships. The values, traditions, and meaning of a strong foreign culture are imposed on one or more native cultures in such scenarios.
According to Phillipa Davies, Advocacy Officer of the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, the Pride flag symbolizes life practices that damage Jamaican culture and biblical teachings. She claims that also has an impact on societal health.
Protesters state they have been calmly requesting that the flag be removed from the day it was displayed, but are surprised that it stays on the flagpole until Emancipendence Week.
Attempts to reach the US Consulate and a member of the LGBTQ community on Friday, August 6, were unsuccessful. Protesters, on the other hand, claim they would continue to oppose the flying of the Pride flag, characterizing it as a sign of disrespect on Jamaican land.
“Jamaicans protest pride flag at the US embassy. They call it cultural imperialism and accuse the US of imposing its values on them. They’re exactly right, of course,” Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh shared the video first reported in early August but now gaining attention on Twitter.
