Mel Gibson Salutes Trump During Weekend UFC Match And Social Media Is Triggered

Award-winning actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson recently drew ire on social media after he was seen saluting former President Donald Trump at a UFC match they both attended near Las Vegas over the weekend.

Gibson was caught on camera making a “military-style” salute to Trump as the former Republican chief executive walked and waved through a crowd where the actor was.

Gibson and Trump attended the UFC 264 match between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier on Saturday — where Trump was met with  cheers and applause as he entered the venue.

The video  attracted widespread social media attention as it circulated online. Gibson, known for his starring roles in “The Patriot” and “Braveheart,” was seen standing near former President Trump’s way as he walked through the crowd and was there seen saluting Trump.

Gibson has not explained what his salute to Trump meant — or if he really did so, although some accounts posted about him being at the UFC match with his sons.

While it is unknown whether Gibson, 65, is backing President Trump — he is certainly not among the vocal celebrity supporters of the former president like Jon Voight, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cain or Roseanne Barr among others.

In 2016, he even dissed Trump’s plan to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. He was also silent during the 2020 election when Trump ran for reelection against now-President Joe Biden.

Former President Trump publicly said that he is considering a rematch against Biden in 2024, although no formal announcement has been made yet on his final decision to run again.

Gibson gets backlash

Meanwhile, as clips of Gibson’s salute spread, backlash against the “Braveheart” actor also ensued — mostly from Democrat supporters.

“Mel Gibson is who we thought he was,” wrote author John Pavlovitz on Twitter.

Another user commented: “The crazy thing is, you didn’t even need to know why Mel Gibson was trending to know that he probably did something s****y. Rest in hell to his dead career.”

“Of course Mel Gibson gave Trump a salute at the UFC game, they both have shared fondness for Nazis and white supremacists,” another user chimed in without explaining her claims.

Another said: “If you’re more upset that I accidentally referred to the UFC match as a game than the fact that Mel Gibson is a racist, homophobic anti semite who counts being verbally abusive towards women as one of his favorite past times then may I suggest you rethink your priorities.”

Another raged: “Mel Gibson saluting Trump shouldn’t surprise anyone. Nazis salute other Nazis.”

Meanwhile, Breitbart commented: “Cry more” as social media users went on a melt down over Gibson saluting Trump.

Last year, the award-winning actor told Fox News that he is simply not qualified to make political statements.

“Who the hell cares what I think?” he said that time. “I’m not an expert — what am I qualified to talk about?”
