M&M Goes Woke, Rebrands Characters For A ‘More Dynamic, Progressive World’

On Thursday, Mars announced that the famous characters of M&M’s — six distinct colored “lentils,” each with their own unique personality — had been updated to reflect a “more dynamic, progressive world.”

The revamp is aimed on instilling a sense of belonging and community in the characters, as well as highlighting their “personalities, rather than their gender”, according to the designers.

The green M&M’s redesign replaces the white heeled go-go boots she was given in 1997 with “cool, laid-back sneakers to reflect her effortless confidence.”

Mars has gotten negative feedback on the seductive portrayal of the green M&M. It will also be “better represented to reflect confidence and empowerment, as a strong female, and known for much more than her boots.”

The green M&M and the brown M&M will have a more cordial connection, demonstrating a more cooperative attitude which is a “force supporting women.”

The company said, “The two characters’ dynamic will have them ‘together throwing shine and not shade.'”

Mars also stated that the chocolate M&M’s heels will be adjusted to a more professional-looking heel height.

The orange M&M, who has a nervous attitude, will “embrace his true self, worries and all.”  The orange M&M’s shoelaces will now be tied which indicates his reserved personality.

A Mars spokesperson claims that the Orange M&M is “one of the most relatable characters with Gen-Z.”

M&Ms of all shapes and sizes will be featured by Mars, as the company moves away from having only one body size, and the prefixes from the characters’ names will be removed in order to emphasize “their personalities, rather than their gender.”

The candy company hopes that its improvements will demonstrate the significance of “self-expression and power of community.”
