Next New York Governor Who Called Cuomo’s Behavior ‘Repulsive’, Shares Message About His Resignation

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who is next in line of succession after Governor Of New york Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation on Tuesday, said Cuomo was making the right move.

Cuomo’s resignation follows after the state attorney general’s office released a scathing report indicating that the governor sexually assaulted women in his workplace. After the report was published, Hochul branded the governor’s conduct “repulsive” and “unlawful,” but she refused to speak more at the time, citing her position in the line of succession.

“I agree with Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It is the right thing to do and in the best interest of New Yorkers,” Hochul said in a statement Tuesday. “As someone who has served at all levels of government and is next in the line of succession, I am prepared to lead as New York State’s 57th Governor.”

Hochul, 62, has operated as Cuomo’s lieutenant governor for the last two terms and has avoided national attention. She was chosen as Cuomo’s running partner after a short time in Congress, which The New York Times characterized as a “move that completes the Democratic ticket and underscores his courtship of western New York” in 2014.

She is set to become New York’s first female governor nearly a decade later.

Although her status, she is not really said to be part of Cuomo’s inner circle, according to reports. Cuomo didn’t mention her once in his pandemic memoir on leadership, according to The New York Post. Hochul and Cuomo have not talked since February, according to a senior source who spoke to The New York Times recently.

She was reportedly making phone calls in preparation for becoming governor if Cuomo resigned, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Hochul has previously characterized herself as a “independent Democrat” who has taken positions outside of her party’s norms.

Hochul was an outspoken opponent of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants before becoming lieutenant governor, and the National Rifle Association gave her an “A” grade. She subsequently changed her position on driver’s licenses and supported the New York SAFE Act, a strict gun-control legislation, claiming in an op-ed that doing so would make New York a better place to live for everyone.
