Pewdiepie is ending the ‘Subscribe to Pewdiepie’ meme after the Christchurch, New Zealdn mosque shootings.

Pewdiepie made the following statement in a video posted to his YouTube channel:

I think it’s time to end the ‘Subscribe to Pewdiepie’ movement or meme. At first, it started out with people doing really positive and fun things to get attention through ‘Subscribe to Pewdiepie,’ but something I learned, I think hopefully it’s something that people can understand, is when you have 90 million people riled up about something, you’re bound to get a few degenerates.

Pewdiepie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, went on to mention how the terrorist who allegedly killed 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand said “subscribe to Pewdiepie” on Facebook Live before committing the terrorist attack.

But then something happened that I don’t think anyone would have predicted, the Christchurch shooter said, ‘Subscribe to Pewdiepie.’ Out of the respect for the families and victims involved, I chose not to address it further than on Twitter where I disavowed the actions taken that day, and I gave my sincerest condolences to everyone affected.

Pewdiepie later said that he is ending the ‘subscribe to Pewdiepie’ meme.

I didn’t want to make it about me because I don’t think it has anything to do with me. To put it plainly, I didn’t want hate to win, but it’s clear to me now the ‘Subscribe to Pewdiepie’ movement should have ended then.

The ‘subscribe to Pewdiepie’ meme became popular during Pewds’ battle to keep his spot as the #1 most subscribed channel on youtube over the Indian music company ‘T-Series.’ Pewdiepie later announced in the video that the “battle” with T-Series is officially over. T-Series, which has 96 million subscribers, surpassed Pewdiepie as the #1 YouTube channel.

In addition to ending the ‘subscribe to Pewdiepie’ meme, Pewds disavowed all racism.

So far, not all of Pewds’ fans have allowed the ‘subscribe to Pewdiepie’ meme to die. Earlier this week, a plane flew over New York City with a ‘subscribe to Pewdiepie’ banner.
