Poll: Joe Biden’s Approval Numbers Sink On Border Crisis

Most Americans are giving Democratic President  Joe Biden a thumbs down on border security and immigration over his current handling of the border crisis.

A new poll conducted by NPR/Marist found that only 34% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance on immigrations issues while the majority — or 53% of those surveyed — disapprove of his handling of such issues, while 14% were unsure.

His rating plummeted across the board with Republicans, independents, and even Democrats showing numbers tanking in the poll released Tuesday.

The survey conducted March 22-25 among 1,309 adult Americans was conducted, found that only 5% of Republicans approve of Biden’s handling of immigration (with 89% disapprove) while only 27% of independent voters gave a thumbs up to the Democratic president’s work on this issue, compared to the majority — or 53% of them who said otherwise. A quarter of Democrats —  or 23% — also disapprove of the job he’s doing on the issue, although 66% of them were agreeable to his performance.

Immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border continue to unfold

The survey results came as the Biden administration continues to grapple with its response to the spiraling crisis at the US-Mexico border as an unprecedented number of migrants seeking asylum continues to pour in.

The US Border Patrol has been apprehending thousands of migrants at the southern border — and the numbers keep rising.

“DHS expects approximately 500,000 to 800,000 migrants to arrive as part of a family group during the 2021 fiscal year that ends in September, a quantity that would equal or exceed the record numbers who entered in 2019,” The Post reported Sunday.

Over 100,000 individuals were apprehended at the US-Mexico border in February alone, as the number of unaccompanied minors seeking to enter the country has ballooned to record highs — straining capacity at immigration facilities.

Recent data suggests that more than 17,000 minors were also at government custody including over 5,000 in Border Patrol facilities.

President Biden has blamed the former Trump administration for what he described as “immoral” practices in dealing with migrants and for dialing back capacity to hold illegal crossers.

Republicans on the other hand said the Democratic chief executive’s reversal of former President Donald Trump’s border policies caused the surge in migrants seeking asylum in the country noting that the influx jumped since Biden’s inauguration on January 20 due to his softer tone on immigration.

Earlier this week, the Biden administration began asking for volunteers across the federal government to help with “urgent efforts” to manage the surge in unaccompanied minors crossing the southern border.

Biden’s approval on coronavirus, handling of the economy

Meanwhile, on the issue of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, President Biden had 65% approving of his job, while 28% disapprove. Ninety-four percent of Democrats give Biden a thumbs up on the issue, while his approval stands at 64% among independents, although it declined to 34% among Republicans.

Majority of Americans — or 51% of those surveyed — also gave Biden a thumbs up for his handling of the economy as 41% disapprove of the work that he has done on the issue.

Surprisingly, independents were torn on whether they approve or disapprove of the job of Biden on the economy with 43% saying they approve, and 44% saying they disapprove, while 12% were unsure.

Among Republicans, 13% approved, while 82% disapprove and as expected, Biden got a 91% approval rating for his handling of the economy among his party, with 5% disapproving and 4% unsure.

A new poll indicates that Americans are giving President Biden a big thumbs up on dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, in general 52% of adult Americans approve of President Biden’s overall job performance, according to the NPR / Marist poll.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
