Report: Taliban Taking Afghan-Americans’ Passports Outside Kabul Airport And Could Likely Use Them
According to NBC News, some Afghans at Kabul Airport are using American passports that do not belong to them in an effort to get cleared for resettlement in the United States.
“In the latest blow to those running up against the clock, Afghan-Americans on Thursday said that Taliban fighters are now attempting to take their U.S. passports and identification orders in an attempt to stop them from leaving the country,” according to a report by the NY Post.
“U.S. passports, driver’s licenses — they are confiscating those pieces of documentation from American citizens,” said Ephraim Mattos, a former Navy SEAL and founder of the humanitarian organization, Stronghold Rescue and Relief, which is working around the clock to evacuate Afghans interpreters and helpers. “They lose proof of who they are, and this has happened on multiple occasions in multiple places,” the outlet reported.

Meanwhile, NBC News says that critical biometric screening of Afghans seeking to enter the United States is not taking place at Kabul’s airport.
NBC News reports:
“Vetting at Hamid Karzai International Airport is complicated by the fact that biometric screening isn’t available, according to an internal State Department memo obtained by NBC News. The U.S. mission team reported at least five cases of Afghans who presented U.S. passports that didn’t belong to them, according to the Sunday dispatch from the Afghanistan Task Force, highlighting fraud concerns and complicating the process of screening people to enter the airport.”
Based on the NBC News story, officials from the CIA, the Pentagon, and members of Congress are enraged that the US would not remain in Afghanistan longer to evacuate more Afghans and resettle them throughout the country.
NBC News also stated:
“People are furious and disgusted,” said a former U.S. intelligence official who declined to be quoted by name. A defense official said he grew nauseated as he considered how many Afghan allies would be left behind.”
“At the CIA, “officers feel a real sense of obligation, moral obligation and personal obligation” to the Afghans they supported and trained, said former CIA Director John Brennan, an NBC News national security consultant.”
While declaring that Afghans are subjected to background checks before to their arrival in the United States, the Biden administration plans to grant “humanitarian parole” to about 50,000 Afghans. This will permit them to enter the United States without first obtaining a visa or completing their immigration process.
Thousands of Afghans would be eligible to change their status after a year or two of humanitarian parole. Many are expected to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in order to stay in the United States.
