Reporter Asks McCarthy If GOP Should “Distance” Themselves From Trump After Youngkin Win (VIDEO)

During a press briefing, a reporter asked House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) if Republican candidates should “distance” themselves from former President Donald Trump following Glenn Youngkin’s win for Governor of Virginia last Tuesday.

“You talked about lessons learned from the most recent races. Will you counsel some of your fellow Republicans in tough races to follow the Youngkin model of trying to keep the former President [Trump] at a distance in maybe swing districts and will you also counsel the former President [Trump] that that may be a good idea for him to distance in some of those competitive races?” asked the reporter.

“I don’t see how the President distanced himself,” replied McCarthy. “He endorsed Youngkin in the primary. He did a telephone Town Hall Forum to get the vote out. We found that the vote got out big. You know, Democrat turnout was pretty close to the same. The Republican turnout is what was larger.”

McCarthy went on to attribute Youngkin’s campaign success to his focus on policy issues.

“I give a lot of credit to the campaign Youngkin ran. You know what he ran on? Policies. In the closing days, you know what he talked about? Making the DMV work. He talked about parents having a say in their kid’s education. It was a great contrast to what the Democrats are doing. So it was a party more united and adding more people to it.”

McCarthy then slammed Democrats for losing several seats in the 2020 House of Representatives elections and crediting the Republican success to President Trump.

“In the last election, Speaker Pelosi bragged that they would win 15 seats. The pollsters said the Democrats would win 15 seats in the House. They got the number right, the party wrong. For the first time since 1994, not one Republican incumbent lost. And we beat the Democrats, and every single Democrat lost to a Republican woman or a Republican minority. We did that with President Trump on the ticket and with the help of President Trump.”

McCarthy said that both Youngkin and Trump are assets to the Republican Party.

“Just as new Governor Glenn Youngkin will fight and help Republicans win the majority, so will President Trump. And I think at the same time, you’re going to find the party expand. This is about addition, not subtraction.”

The House Minority Leader finished up his response by criticizing Democrats for their failed policies that have led to record-setting inflation.

“What’s driving more people to [Republican] policies is they’re seeing the failed policies of what the Democrats have provided us. Every American is going to find out in a very short time period that their Thanksgiving is going to be the most expensive, most expensive they’ve ever witnessed. Every week, they find out when they go to the gas station how much more it costs because of these policies. And I think it’s going to be an easy campaign for Republicans to bring more people to the party.”
