Scientists scanned the brains of over 4,500 children ages 9 to 10 and found that 7 hours of daily screen time causes a thinning of the brain cortex.
According to a previous study, a thin cortex is correlated with reduced IQ.
The NIH study also found that children who spent 2 hours a day on smart devices did not undergo the same thinning of the cortex as those who use screens for 7 hours.
However, children who spent just 2 hours a day on their smart devices scored lower on thinking tests than children who spent less than 2 hours.
The average age at which a child receives a smartphone is now 10 years old.
