Texas Teacher Charged With Child Endangerment For Forcing COVID-positive 13-Year Old Boy In Car Trunk For ‘Quarantine’

Following the discovery of a 13-year-old in the trunk of his mother’s car at a drive-thru COVID testing location, authorities in the Houston region arrested and charged the mother.

According to court filings, Sarah Beam, 42, a teacher for the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, has been charged with felony endangering a child.

Cy-Fair ISD said in a statement, “CFPD was alerted that a child was in the trunk of a car at a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site earlier this week. Law enforcement conducted a full investigation, resulting in a warrant for arrest.”

The event happened on January 3 at Pridgeon Stadium, which is located in northwest Harris County and served as a testing facility. The district director of health Bevin Gordon told police she was getting information from the vehicles in line for COVID testing when Beam told her the child was in her trunk.

The criminal complaint says Beam told Gordon the child had tested positive previously so she put the child inside the trunk to avoid COVID exposure.

Gordon discovered the boy lying down in the trunk when Beam unlocked it, according to the complaint. After being advised that the test would only be given once the child was seated in the rear seat of the car, Beam agreed. According to prosecutors, investigators looked at security footage that showed the child going from the trunk to the back seat of the vehicle.

When Gordon returned to the car after calling the police, she noticed that the teen had moved to the back seat. According to authorities, no harm was done to the child.
