Top Two Manhattan Prosecutors Leading Trump Organization Probe Resign Suddenly
On Wednesday, two prosecutors leading the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s investigation into the Trump Organization resigned, casting doubt on the case.
The New York Times was the first to report on Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne’s resignations.
The prosecutors stepped down together, according to a source who spoke to The Washington Post. The coordinated nature of the exits, according to the insider, was a symptom of severe unhappiness with the case’s course.
According to the New York Times, the move occurred after District Attorney Alvin Bragg expressed doubts about the case to the counsel.
Ex-DA Cyrus Vance, who charged the Trump Organization and its longstanding chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg with tax fraud last June, initiated the investigation against former President Donald Trump in 2018.
Before Bragg took over in January, Vance assembled a new grand jury. According to the New York Times, prosecutors had been interviewing witnesses before the grand jury until approximately a month ago, effectively halting the probe.
The probe’s future is uncertain without Pomerantz and Dunne to guide it.
Ron Fischetti, a criminal defense attorney who represents the Trump Organization, told The Washington Post that he anticipated the resignations and was “happy” with the outcome, while maintaining his clients’ innocence.
He said that without Pomerantz and Dunne, there was “no investigation,” and that their resignations were an indication that Bragg was close to ending the case.
