VIDEO: Kamala Harris Says “Everybody Needs To Be Woke”

A video clip of Vice President Kamala Harris from 2017 has reemerged, stirring controversy and criticism among conservatives who label her as a “Communist functionary” and argue that she is “too radical” to hold the highest office in the land.

In the clip, then-Senator Harris, during Recode’s annual Code Conference, emphatically called on “everybody” to be “woke.” “We have to stay woke. Like everybody needs to be woke. And you can talk about if you’re the wokest or woker, but just stay more woke than less woke,” she proclaimed. This statement was made alongside Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

The conference, which tackled issues such as immigration and the environment, also saw Harris vehemently criticizing the Trump administration’s drug and immigration policies. Her impassioned rhetoric included attacking measures aimed at tightening border security and reviving the war on drugs. “I get upset when we say we’re going to shut our door to refugees who are fleeing such atrocities and have been standing in line for two years to qualify for refugee status, and they arrive here, and we turn them away. Yes, I’m gonna get mad about that. I’m gonna get mad when we have an attorney general who’s trying to resuscitate the war on drugs. And he thinks the greatest evil that mankind has ever seen is marijuana. … Leave grandma’s medical marijuana alone,” Harris declared.

Harris reaffirmed her stance the following day on X, urging Americans to “stay active” and “stay woke.” The term “woke,” which gained traction in 2017, is defined by dictionaries like Oxford and Merriam-Webster as being alert to social justice issues. However, it has since morphed into a catch-all phrase synonymous with extreme left-wing ideologies and agendas.

Fast forward seven years, and Harris’s past remarks have resurfaced, drawing ire from critics on social media. Conservative author James Lindsay did not mince words, describing Harris as a “Communist functionary.” “Kamala is a low-level Communist functionary, and I’m tired of being told we have to pretend she’s not,” he asserted.

This controversy comes in the wake of President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race last month. Shortly after his exit, Biden endorsed his vice president, paving the way for Harris to secure the Democratic nomination. On Friday, Harris officially clinched her party’s nomination, garnering a majority of votes from convention delegates, according to the DNC.

As Harris gears up to announce her running mate and head to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, one thing is clear: her radical past and “woke” ideology will remain under intense scrutiny. Conservatives argue that her extreme views make her unfit to lead, and the American people will have to decide if they want a president who prioritizes left-wing dogma over common-sense governance.
