Billboard just removed the viral song ‘Old Town Road’ from its country music charts.
19-year-old artist ‘Lil Nas X’ set a new Billboard record by occupying Billboard’s Hot 100, R&B, and country music charts at the same time.
Billboard, however, removed the song ‘Old Town Road’ from the country charts.
Billboard released the following statement in regards to the sudden change:
Upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.
Lil Nas X originally uploaded the song under the “country” genre on Soundcloud.
‘Old Town Road’ gained popularity after the song became a viral meme on Tik Tok.
