WATCH: Canadian Patriot SLAMS Justin Trudeau For Banning 1,500 Kinds Of “Assault-Style” Weapons
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a formal announcement banning over 1500 ‘assault-style weapons.’
Trudeau and other members of the Liberal Party are outspoken advocates of clamping down on so-called ‘assault rifles.’ This new ban accomplishes one of a series of restrictive gun control objectives Trudeau set forth during the last election cycle.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Trudeau said, “We have long been committed to strengthening gun control in this country, including banning military-style assault weapons.” The Prime Minister continued, “There is no need in Canada for guns designed to kill the largest amount of people in the shortest amount of time.”
Despite the fact that the term ‘assault weapon’ lacks a legal definition in Canada, Trudeau’s assault weapons ban covers 11 different categories of firearms.
According to The Globe and Mail, the assault weapons ban includes automatic and semi-automatic rifles. These include the Ruger Mini-14, “the CZ Scorpion, the Swiss Arms Classic Green, the Beretta Cx4 Storm, the Robinson Armament XCR and the Sig Sauer SIG MCX, among others, as well as firearms that use the same platforms.”
The official list released includes over 1,500 models of rifles.
Government officials estimate the ban may end up applying to up to 125,000 guns in Canada.
Canadians will have a two year grace period in which the government will offer them a “fair” price for their rifles.
Predictably, Trudeau’s announcement of a gun ban has received massive backlash.
Those against the assault weapons ban called it not only unnecessary but believe it is punitive to law-abiding gun owners. Opponents say the ban will do very little in deterring criminals from getting their hands on weapons illegally and will place an undue regulative burden on those who are determined to follow the law.
Another criticism is that Trudeau’s administration has still yet to finish implementing all of the gun control measures from the Firearms Act that was passed last May.
After the recent tragic mass shooting that occurred in Nova Scotia, some conservatives are suspicious of the real motives and timing behind the ban. They wonder if Trudeau and the Liberals are genuinely interested in protecting Canadian citizens or if they are simply taking advantage of a crisis to implement gun control policies to score points with their base.
Rod Giltaca, the executive director of the Canadian Coalition of Firearm Rights, says the government’s move is “purely political.”
The Trudeau administration claims there is no connection between the assault weapons ban and the recent tragedy.
