WATCH: President Trump Threatens To Withhold Coronavirus Relief Aid To States With Sanctuary Cities
President Trump renewed his threat to withhold federal coronavirus aid funds to states that contain so-called sanctuary cities, which protect criminal illegal aliens.
“I don’t think you should have sanctuary cities if they get that kind of aid. If you’re going to get aid to the cities and states for the kind of numbers you’re talking about, billions of dollars, I don’t think you should have sanctuary cities,” Trump said Wednesday.
“We want a safe
country,” the president added. “We don’t
want people that are criminals and criminals from other countries, in many
cases, protected and you can’t get to them.”
Sanctuary
cities and states are jurisdictions that require local law enforcement to not
cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
