Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave insight into the U.S. Strategy in countering Iran, saying that the U.S would target the country’s ‘actual decision-makers.’
Secretary Pompeo told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “We’re going to respond against the actual decision-makers, the people who are causing this threat from the Islamic Republic of Iran. We’re going to take this seriously and we’re going to defend the American people at every turn.”
President Trump’s decision to eliminate Iranian General Qassem Soleimani has rattled the Middle East, with Iran threatening to strike back with unknown consequences for the U.S. and the world.
Secretary Pompeo said that if the U.S. military took further action to counter Iran, it would be perfectly legal under the laws of armed conflict.
During a press conference about the killing of Soleimani, President Trump made it clear that the attack against Soleimani was made to ‘stop a war, not to start a war.’
