Woke Comedy Central Removes Episode Of The Office From Being Aired On Television

The series finale of The Office aired in May 2013, and Dunder Mifflin is still generating news almost 10 years after the show’s launch. Several fans of the famous NBC series would agree that Michael Scott (played by Steve Carrell) is a difficult character to like (for some), and it seems that his shenanigans have landed him controversy another time.

On August 25, word broke that a beloved episode of The Office will be removed from network television, a decision that many believe was motivated by “cancel culture.”

The episode that was pulled is Season 1, Episode 2, dubbed “Diversity Day,” where Michael makes an effort to get a chuckle out of his workers by performing his own version of Chris Rock’s famous comic act, “N****s Vs. Black People, Michael’s conduct is subsequently reported to corporate, which orders office-wide diversity training as a result of Michael’s actions.

During his tenure as regional manager at Dunder Mifflin paper business, Michael Scott has insulted people of every gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In Season 3, the episode “Gay Witch Hunt” had Michael outing Oscar for being gay, while the episode “Women’s Appreciation” was a tribute to sexism. The producers and executives at Comedy Central, on the other hand, are concerned about just that one episode in particular, interestingly enough. The whole point of his character was that you were supposed to laugh at his worldview, so if anything this episode cancellation should offend those that aren’t “woke.”

The episode “Diversity Day” has been widely accepted as one of the funniest — as well as most inappropriate — episodes of The Office to date, leading many fans to question Comedy Central’s decision to cancel the program.

There is widespread agreement among fans that the show’s politically incorrect comedy is an important component of what makes The Office so wonderful.  One spectator said on Twitter, “‘Diversity Day’? Seriously? This is why the term ‘woke’ gets dragged through the mud, because networks like yours show zero intelligent discretion when it comes to censoring programming that isn’t even offensive! What is wrong with you?”

The following is an excerpt from Steve’s earlier interview with Esquire: “A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today — which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”
