Bombshell internal documents recently unsealed from the FBI related to the arrest of General Michael Flynn show that top agency officials discussed how to entrap him “to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired.”

According to Fox News, “the handwritten notes — written by the FBI’s former head of counterintelligence Bill Priestap after a meeting with then-FBI Director James Comey and then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Fox News is told — further suggested that agents planned in the alternative to get Flynn “to admit to breaking the Logan Act” when he spoke to then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential transition period.”

The notes were turned over by the Department of Justice just last week, even though a 2018 court order from the U.S. District Court for Washington D.C. required exculpatory info related to Flynn’s arrest be provided.

The public now knows that the FBI was hell-bent on prosecuting General Flynn in one way or another and the investigation related to his conversations with the Russian ambassador was tainted.

The Logan Act and Flynn’s interview with the FBI

More problems emerged when the history of the Logan Act was disclosed to the public. The federal statute has been on the books since 1799 and it was never once used in a criminal prosecution before Flynn’s case. The original purpose was to prevent individuals from falsely representing themselves as representatives of the U.S. government, which is extremely difficult to do in today’s world given current technology and the availability of information about government employees. The notes detailed that these members of the FBI either wanted to get him to admit to breaking this law, or lie during the interview, which would also allow them to make an arrest. Flynn never actually admitted to doing anything illegal during the interview when it took place; he was only charged with one count of lying to federal authorities.

Since the documents were released to the public, it has become obvious that Michael Flynn’s contact with the Russian ambassador at the time was not illegal.  There was even information leaked to the Washington Post the day before Flynn was interrogated which revealed that wiretaps of Flynn’s phone calls showed no wrongdoing.

Other FBI employees who had ties to the investigation have also shown bias against Trump and others.  Peter Strzok, a former FBI agent, and Lisa Paige, an FBI attorney, had exchanged text messages that showed they disliked then-candidate Donald Trump and supported Hillary Clinton for president. Strzok was eventually relieved of his position due to his bias.  Andrew McCabe, Former Deputy Director of the FBI, has also since been fired from the agency over several ethics violations, but he has not faced criminal charges for his actions.

Trump‘s response to the Michael Flynn situation

President Trump was obviously not happy with the FBI when this new information about the agency’s desire to set-up Flynn was revealed. These revelations gave further credence to Trump’s belief that the entire Russian collusion investigation was nothing but a two-year-long “witch hunt.”  Even worse, it seems that at least one innocent person, General Flynn, was prosecuted without any justifiable law enforcement purpose.  Trump has maintained since early in his presidency that the whole situation was a hoax.  As time has passed and more information regarding the motivations behind the FBI investigation continues to be revealed to the public, President Trump’s assumptions are proving to be true.

Trump did not hold back on Twitter when he stated unequivocally that James Comey was a “dirty cop” who “got caught.”  Donald Trump Jr. commented in support of Flynn as well, saying that his life was ruined by the FBI agents who tried to make the public believe that Flynn was a Russian asset. Flynn’s first response after the information was revealed was to post a picture of an American Flag on Twitter.

President Trump further added that “fake news” CNN refused to cover Flynn’s new-found innocence because it does not support the network’s narrative of the Russia investigation.  Trump’s tweet said that the whole situation was a big scam and that CNN should “pay a big price” for getting the story so wrong.

Another tweet said that General Flynn is a war hero and that this situation should never be allowed to happen to a U.S. citizen again.

It remains to be seen if any additional actions will be taken against those responsible for the tainted Flynn investigation.
