  • OUTRAGE: Anti‑Israel Mob Chants ‘Death to the IDF’ Outside Park East Synagogue — Mayor‑Elect Mamdani Faces Backlash

On Wednesday night, Nov. 19, 2025, hundreds of anti‑Israel/pro‑Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside Park East Synagogue on East 67th Street in Manhattan, shouting hostile slogans as an event took place inside, Jewish Insider reported, and reports put the crowd at roughly 200 people (i24NEWS).

Protesters chanted slogans including “Globalize the intifada,” “Death to the IDF,” “Resistance is glorious,” and “take another settler out,” and carried drums and signs such as “Zionism is a death cult,” CombatAntisemitism documented. Other reported chants included “We don’t want no Zionists here,” “Resistance, you make us proud, take another settler out,” and “Intifada revolution” (Times of Israel).

The demonstration targeted a seminar inside the synagogue focused on Jewish immigration to Israel, which was hosted by Nefesh B’Nefesh, Jewish Insider reported — a civic event that attendees said should never be met with intimidation at a house of worship.

Organizers of the protest included Pal‑Awda New York and New Jersey, Within Our Lifetime, and Jewish Voice for Peace New York, per coverage of the demonstration (CombatAntisemitism).

Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani’s office pushed back on the violent rhetoric while also criticizing the synagogue event; Dora Pekec, a spokesperson for Mamdani, said: “The mayor-elect has discouraged the language used at last night’s protest and will continue to do so. He believes every New Yorker should be free to enter a house of worship without intimidation, and that these sacred spaces should not be used to promote activities in violation of international law,” according to Jewish Insider.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the demonstration in stark terms: “No New Yorker should be intimidated or harassed at their house of worship. What happened last night at Park East Synagogue was shameful and a blatant attack on the Jewish community. Hate has no place in New York,” Jewish Insider documented her statement.

Reform Jewish leaders captured the alarm felt across the community: “The shouts of ‘death to the IDF,’ ‘globalize the intifada,’ and ‘make them scared’ ring in the ears of those who attended the seminar on Israeli immigration hosted by the congregation and in the hearts of every Jew who knows they and their synagogue are at risk of antisemitic protest,” Union for Reform Judaism.

Video and social posts from the scene — including footage of the chants and crowd size shared by Rabbi Poupko and others — circulated on X and were collected by monitoring groups covering the event (CombatAntisemitism).

The location and target mattered: this was not outside a consulate or a government office but outside a synagogue on East 67th Street, raising fresh concerns about the safety of houses of worship in the city (CombatAntisemitism) and the wider reporting that put the crowd at roughly 200 (i24NEWS).

Observers warned this fits a disturbing pattern of protests around the city since Oct. 7 — sometimes escalating into language and threats not previously heard at demonstrations — a trend chronicled by local reporting and Jewish community groups (Times of Israel).

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams said he would visit Park East Synagogue to show support upon his return, according to reporting on the incident Jewish Insider. Reform Jewish leaders urged all civic leaders — especially Mayor‑elect Mamdani — to “unequivocally condemn this dangerous escalation by protestors” and to ensure the safety of Jewish institutions (Union for Reform Judaism).

What happens next matters: will Mayor‑elect Mamdani move from discouraging violent language to clear policy and enforcement that protects worshippers, or will mixed messages leave houses of worship vulnerable while rhetoric escalates? The community — and the city — are watching closely.
