Twitter Suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene Over Alleged Spreading Of Covid-19 Misinformation

Twitter suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene once again Monday night, after she supposedly shared misinformation about Covid-19 which violated the social media’s policy.

The Georgia lawmaker posted in a series of tweets information about the coronavirus — which Twitter flagged as “misleading.” Greene said in her posts, for example, that Covid-19 vaccinations should not be necessary for individuals who are not obese or above the age of 65.

The account of the Republican lawmaker was suspended from the platform for 12 hours.

A Twitter spokesperson told CBS News that her account is in “read-only” mode and Greene may be permanently banned from social media if she continues to promote misinformation about the coronavirus as determined by the platform.

Aside from locking her out of her account for half a day, some of the lawmaker’s tweets are also now flagged with a warning message about “misleading” posts.

“This tweet is misleading. Learn why health officials recommend a vaccine for more people,” the message read.

According to Twitter’s Covid-19 misleading information policy, “false or misleading information concerning the virus’s prevalence, danger of infection, or mortality” will result in action from the social media.

Greene was also banned from Twitter earlier this year for her tweets about probable fraud in the Georgia elections.

Greene responds to Twitter ban

Meanwhile, Greene lashed back at Twitter in response to the most recent ban — telling a Facebook Live on Monday night that “freedom of expression is under attack in America like never before.”

She also fumed at how Republicans seem to be the only ones “experiencing being canceled every single day.”

Once the restriction on her account was lifted, Greene blasted Twitter for its action.

“American social media company Twitter banned me for 12 hrs, censoring me, & violating my freedom of speech,” she posted.

“You know who else silences, censors, and bans people they don’t like and want heard. Communist China,” she added, telling Twitter that “communism is not good.”

“Save America, Stop Communism!” she further said.

As the Delta strain of the coronavirus spreads fast across the US, President Joe Biden has asked social media firms in the past week to take greater responsibility in countering vaccination disinformation.

On Friday, he said that social media sites like Facebook are “killing people” by allowing disinformation to spread so quickly, adding that “the only epidemic we have is among the unvaccinated.”

But he later pulled back from his criticism of the Big Tech — clarifying that he wasn’t pertaining to the companies.

“Facebook isn’t killing people. These 12 people are out there giving misinformation,” the Democratic President said referring to a report that concluded 12 individuals are behind the majority of all Covid-19 misinformation in the country.

“Anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it. It’s killing people. It’s bad information. My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally that somehow I’m saying Facebook is killing people, that they would do something about the misinformation. The outrageous misinformation about the vaccine. That’s what I meant,” Biden said in a softer stance to social media companies.
